I think that they might be a little better. He would not have allowed the KKK to have such influence after the war. I think things would have moved a little more slowly as far as race relations goes. As far as the goverment was concerned people would be equal, but without the heavy opression that followed the Civil War, there wouldn't have been the backlash in the 20th century, therefore while we would equal in the eyes of the law we would be more class orientated, separate but equal. Blacks and white wouldn't mingle, like in the south during the '50s, and interracical marriage wouldn't be common place like today.
