What was the Union initaly planning to do with all the slaves once they were freed? No nation had ever dealt with such a large number of freed slaves before so what were the first steps to take?
Weren't they not going to do anything with them for the time being. I thought that their position as freed people was even unceartin if the north won the war, and the union reformed. Weren't they just organized into work camps by the army immediately after their freedom specificaly because the government had very little idea what to do?
