I noticed that we covered in class that African Americans were offered full rights as citizens if they were to serve in the Army for the Union. I was curious as to how much truth there was to that because it seems to be somewhat far fetched with my post war knowledge.

I don't think it really happened. Jim Corw laws came into being in many states and Blacks still couldn't vote. So, they were free but not citizens like the rest of white male America.
