Did the white soldiers have a problem with the fact that they had to go out and fight on the front line while the black soldiers were back building the forts and cooking the food?
I don't think so. Many believed that they couldn't fight, so it was better to have them doing other jobs than in the front lines. When the Union men found out that they could fight and fought well they wanted them in the front lines, yes.
I think the real issue during the conflict became the disillusionment with fighting for a group of people that a large number of people had never even encountered before.
